Review: The Mitsubishi Outlander in Michigan
A Guide to the Mitsubishi Outlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander has been a serious, though smaller, contender in the SUV space.
Opinions of Outlanders are divided; if you’ve never had a problem, it’s a symphony of engineering and design. If you’ve had problems… well π¬
Buckle in Michigan, we’re reviewing the Outlander’s purported efficient powertrains, ingenious flexible seating arrangements, and its drawbacks. ππ«
ποΈ Best Mitsubishi Outlander Years:
The Mitsubishi Outlander goes back twenty years to the first gen in 2003. Back then, a burgeoning crossover SUV trend compelled the carmaker to enter the ring with the Outlander/Airtrek.
Of course, we’re all about used cars at Pontiac Public Auto Auctions. While Mitsubishi might not be as popular as other Japanese makers like Honda or Toyota, the Outlander makes a strong argument. And you can get a great deal at Pontiac Public Auto Auction on a used Outlander.
Look out for the 2005 and 2006 models. Both of these received very few complaints.
CoPilot recommends a well maintained 2003 Outlander. That’s the key; well-maintained. When you are browsing our inventory, note the condition as we try to list as much as possible.
Despite faulty A/C systems and problems starting, many people put well over 100k on 2003 models, and they will be the cheapest model you can find.
Jumping ahead to the reliable 2012 and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlanders. With just 32 NHTSA complaints and five recalls on the 2013 model, it provides a good balance of modernity and value, especially considering its three-row seating, best suited for smaller occupants. π§
The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) stands out from the Outlander lineup, as it offers eco-friendly plug-in hybrid power.
We caution anyone considering the 2014, 2015, 2016, or 2018 models. Consult a mechanic, unless you are a mechanic, then, you know… talk to yourself. π π§
Mitsubishi Outlander Features
π All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Capability:
The Mitsubishi Outlander lineup, including the ES AWC (All-Wheel Control) model, prides itself on its AWD capability. If you love superior traction and stability, especially when navigating various road conditions, the Outlander has you covered.
The Outlander's AWC ensures confident handling no matter what, and that’s important because now is the time for slick or snowy roads throughout our state. βοΈ π§οΈ
Enough cannot be said about AWD. It’s useful on west 96, northbound on 75 (all the way to the UP), and when you’re adventuring into new discoveries, like out to Bad Axe (I haven’t been there, look it up). π₯Ύ
π Spacious Interior:
Outlanders have thoughtfully designed cabins. There’s ample space for both passengers and cargo. The generous rear-seat legroom ensures that everyone can enjoy the journey, and the flexible cargo area accommodates your belongings with ease. Plus, the Outlander's interior isn't just about space; it's about user-friendly technology (in the newer models) and a host of convenient features.
Consider the Mitsubishi Outlander SE, which boasts a roomy interior.
π‘οΈ Advanced Safety Technology:
Mitsubishi Outlanders have evolved in safety technology. Newer models like the 2022 Outlander feature advanced safety tech, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
Even 10+ year-old Outlander models offer standard safety features like stability control, multiple airbags, and antilock brakes, ensuring basic protection. While older models lack advanced tech, they remain reliable and affordable choices.
πͺ Flexible Seating Arrangements:
In the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and its modern counterparts, advanced seating configurations provide effortless adjustments and enhanced cargo space. With features like flexible second-row and reclining rear seats, these versions prioritize comfort and adaptability. For those who want it, the Mitsubishi Outlander GT offers versatile third-row seating.
Even in earlier editions like the 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, a strong commitment to practicality and convenience shines through. While not as cutting-edge as newer models, these older variants offer significant space and customizable arrangements for passengers and cargo, making them suitable for various lifestyles. π§³
π£οΈ Ground Clearance:
The Mitsubishi Outlander typically boasts a ground clearance ranging from 7.3 to 8.1 inches, varying by trim level and model year. This measurement can vary slightly between different versions. Ground clearance is a pivotal factor affecting the Outlander's versatility in handling diverse road conditions, whether on or off-road.
For those considering a hybrid suitable for various terrains, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT offers 7.3 inches of ground clearance, allowing you to tackle rough terrains, deep snow, and off-road trails while maintaining an eco-friendly footprint.
π₯ Efficient Powertrains:
The Mitsubishi Outlander offers versatile and efficient powertrains, meeting the needs of eco-conscious drivers. Newer models like the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV feature a plug-in hybrid system for extended all-electric driving range and reduced emissions.
The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is known for its fuel-efficient powertrains, with options like the 2.0L MIVEC and 2.4L MIVEC engines, ensuring both fuel savings and reliable performance. Older models, like the 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, feature efficient four-cylinder engines for commendable fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. Mitsubishi's dedication to cutting-edge automotive technology provides choices for a variety of preferences and requirements.
π Mitsubishi Outlander Lifespan
Mileage
Outlanders can, if maintained well and driven well, last a long time. Engine Patrol puts them at 13–17 years when driving an average of 15,000 years annually. The Driver Adviser says on average, Outlanders can reach over 200,000 miles before repairs aren't worth it.
There are exceptions out there, like those 20-year-old Outlanders with another few years left on them we see hit our Pontiac auction lot from time to time. But your sweet spot might be the 2012–2013 models mentioned earlier.

Prices
When it comes to a used Mitsubishi Outlander, the starting bid at our auction lot is typically $100, meaning you will save thousands going used over new, and it’s likely you’ll save buying used at an auction over a used dealership.

β οΈ Mitsubishi Outlander Problems
Transmission Problems:
Some older models may encounter transmission problems, especially in automatic transmissions. Be sure to inspect and, if necessary, maintain the transmission system regularly.
Interior Materials:
In some earlier models, interior materials may not be as high-quality as those found in competitors' vehicles. While this is less of an issue in recent models, it's something to keep in mind if you're considering an older Outlander.
Fuel Efficiency:
While the Outlander offers excellent features, its fuel efficiency is not always as competitive as some other SUVs in its class.
