Older Trucks with the Best Gas Mileage
Older Trucks with the Best Gas Mileage
Who doesn’t love a dependable used truck? But, in days where gas prices soar almost at a moment’s notice, driving that beloved truck can take its toll.
We at Pontiac Public Auto Auction did some homework and compiled a list of used trucks with the best gas mileage, some of them older than you might expect for fuel economy. β½
But it’s true, even older trucks from the 90s and early 2000s trucks had decent fuel efficiency. You simply separate the best from the rest.
Here’s a list of older trucks with combined MPG of at least 20 that you’ll find at Pontiac Auto Auction. π»
Compact Pickup Trucks
Let’s start with compact trucks.
The Ford Ranger! Enough said. When browsing our auction lot inventory, look for mid and late 2000s models, especially 2009–2011, that earned up to 26 MPG combined. Wow!
Even late 90s and early 2000s Ford Ranger’s earn up to 22 MPG. These scrappy little trucks should never be underestimated.
Next is the Mazda B-Series. Early 2000s models, particularly the manual 5-speed, earned 23 MPG combined.
Finally, the late 90s Dodge Dakota Pickup earns around 20 MPG combined city/highway.
Midsize Pickup Trucks
Late 90s, specifically the 1997, Chevrolet S10 earned a combined 23 MPG.
Another reliable Chevy truck is the Colorado. The 2016 model will earn 24 MPG combined, and older, more affordable models between 2009-2012 still earn roughly 22 MPG combined or a bit better.

The GMC Canyon is similar to the Chevrolet Colorado. 2009–2016 models average around 24 MPG combined highway/city.
The Nissan Frontier is a very affordable option. Early 2000s models and prior are often found at our auto auction and can get you 20-22 MPG.
No list is complete without the Toyota Tacoma! Known for their reliability and decent fuel efficiency, the 2009–2013 models offer a good balance between fuel economy and capability, earning upwards of a fantastic 26 MPG! π
Full-size Pickup Trucks
The heavy-duty 2015 Ford F-150 claims an impressive 26 MPG combined, which is the best among 2009-2016 models. π

The Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid 2005-2013 models earn a sightly better 23 MPG than the standard model’s 21 MPG. 2009 was a very fuel efficient model. Pretty good for big trucks.
The GMC Sierra Hybrid 2009-2013 models improved the original models at around 20-21 MPG.
The 2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel really ups the game with an impressive 30 MPG highway and 24 MPG combined. β The standard models, years 2014 and 2016, are no joke either.
Let’s recognize the 2009-2012 Suzuki Equator 4-cylinder which can earn up to 21 MPG combined.
What are the best used trucks under $10,000?
Crossover Trucks
The Honda Ridgeline is often considered a "crossover" truck due to its unibody construction, giving it a slight advantage in gas mileage compared to body-on-frame trucks. The 2017 model especially stands out, earning around 22 MPG combined, 26 highway. π
Pickup Trucks Under $5,000
It’ll be tougher to find fuel efficient trucks under $5000 since that price likely means an older mode and higher mileage.
What's good mileage for a used car?
But Pontiac Auto Auction has lots of great cars at great prices, including the used trucks we’ve talked about. Bring a budget and bidding strategy to the inventory.
Look for the used trucks with great gas mileage that we listed above, like the Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, or GMC Canyon. Keep an eye out for those pre-2010 models, and you could be lucky enough to score a truck with fewer than 150,000 miles that’ll save you money upfront and at the pump.
