A Review of the GMC Sierra and How to get a Great Deal
Buying the GMC Sierra at Auction
The Sierra has been around for generations. It was introduced in 1962 as variants of the C and K series pickup trucks. It got a body overhaul in 1967 for the second generation. The third generation came in 1973, but the GMC Sierra truck we know and love today came in 1991.
For all these years, the GMC Sierra has served multiple purposes, catered to families and workhorses and maintained a rugged persona. πͺ
We sell all kinds of cars at Pontiac Public Auto Auction. Mileage is usually high, but then the GMC Sierra is known for a long lifespan.

π The Best GMC Sierra Years:
Lots of opinions floating out there, and some data as well. Engine Patrol lauds the 2010 Sierra model, for instance, as does Four Wheel Trends, and there’s usually praise for the 2012 GMC Sierra, and newer models.
Most of the GMC Sierra’s sold at Express are late 90s and early 2000s and certain of those models, like the 2006 GMC Sierra, as well as the 2005, 2004, 2003, and the 1998 models are all top tier.
Browse our inventory of trucks, SUVs, sedans, sports cars, boats, RVs, and more now.
While reliability is the top factor, the “best” also depends on your preferences and driving needs.
The 2017 Sierra didn’t have much to offer in the way of towing, and exterior lighting was a big issue for the 2014 and 2015 models.
Some of the older models, such as from the 80s and mid-90s, while not being the most reliable anymore, have certainly retained their iconic status. π€©

β οΈ GMC Sierra Problems
There are models you need to stay clear of, and downsides to a few of the older models. Drivers have reported electrical problems and AC problems with the 2005 model.
Even the beloved 2012 model has had a few engine problems and vibrating.
But the models you really need to think twice about are the 2014, 2017, and the 2001, 2000, and 1999 GMC Sierra.
The 1999-2001 models were all plagued by a flood of brake troubles. π°
π²Price
Much of the time, it all comes down to this, doesn’t it.
Out of the Sierra’s sold by Pontiac Auto in recent months, the average price was $1,500 and mileage ranged from 120,000 to 360,000 miles. Would you believe the 120k Sierra sold for less?!
But that’s what it’s like at our Pontiac auction lot. Amazing prices on donated cars.
A quick comparison with used car dealerships cements our point. You can expect to pay $2,000 on a 20-year-old GMC Sierra 1500 with 150,000 miles.
The same truck at a dealership will cost two times, even four times as much! π°
So… if you’re looking for a solid make and model, American-made no less, then an older GMC Sierra 1500 with proof that it can last AND a lot of miles left in the tank, may be the truck just for you. And you can spend money at auction AND on repairs and still save a ton! π₯³
